To all Clubs and Players within Dorset, With the help of all the Outdoor clubs and some Indoor Clubs in Dorset, the Dorset Youth Bowls Academy was inaugurated in April 2019 . Since then we have made great progress.
We have become a registered Charity.
We have represented Dorset at the National Finals in the Sutton Winson Competition
We have played games with youngsters from other counties.
We have had our youngsters selected to play for the County and they have played in the County Competitions and Leagues
We have had some of our players selected to go to the Bowls England Youth Academy Training Weekends
We have supported clubs in Dorset to start Junior Sections.
We have run very successful coaching days for our youngsters with our own coaches but also with invited well known Guest Coaches including Ellen Falkner MBE, three times Commonwealth Games gold medalist.
We have welcomed Julie Leake to our Committee as Secretary and with her knowledge and contacts she has been a great asset for the progress of the Academy. Julie as the only England Woman to win the World Bowls Champion of Champions crown in 2006 is also happy to share her knowledge and inspire the youngsters through her coaching.
We have introduced an Under 18 Competition open to all players under 18 in Dorset. Unfortunately this event had to be cancelled last year but we hope to run it later this year .
Penny Cresswell along with Julie won the National Championships Triples Competition and is also happy to share her knowledge and inspire the youngsters. Sid and Joy Steele who were instrumental in setting up the Academy have introduced and nurtured so many youngsters to become really good players. They have supported and continue to help any club who run or want to set up a Junior Section. We are also very grateful for the support we have received from Bowls Dorset and our Chairman Tony Ives. We also welcomed Bev Champion from Dorset Golf Resort as a Trustee.
We have regular Committee Meetings and are always looking at ways to help youngsters get into the sport of bowls. We hope to encourage youngsters to enjoy the sport but also help anyone who aspires to playing for their country. We recognise the cost of starting to play our sport can be very expensive for youngsters. The purchase of bowls , which the youngsters can out grow very quickly could put youngsters off from playing our sport. With this in mind the DYBA has decided to set up a bowls loan system that any club can ask to use for all youngsters under 18. We will have a register, with the Youngster’s name and address and their Club’s name. All bowls will remain the property of DYBA . As the youngster grows and needs a larger size bowl the Club will be able to request an exchange. For any Club wishing to start a junior section DYBA can loan all the equipment needed to set up the section. Sid and Joy Steele would also help any club and their Coaches with launching a Junior Section. In 2018 as Bowls Dorset Ladies President I made the Youth Academy my charity and really appreciated the support that my chosen charity received from you all. After many years of being involved in Bowls in Dorset I have now moved to Hove to be near my three daughters but am continuing my involvement with the the Academy as a Trustee and Fundraiser. I handed over my role of Treasurer and we were very pleased to welcome Sandra Adair to be our New Treasurer. We are grateful to Shirley Bowley who audits our annual accounts. To enable us to carry on supporting youngsters throughout Dorset and help us start the Bowls and Equipment Loan Scheme we have launched a lottery. If you would like to be in with a chance to win £25,000 each week and help our cause please see leaflets below. Join by 5th June and have the chance of also winning B&Q vouchers. I would be obliged if you could display this email on your Club notice board for those who do not use the Internet. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the lottery or the Academy. Kind regards Carol Williams - Trustee/Fundraiser
