Well-Deserved Recognition at Bowls England Awards for Sid and Joy Steele

L to R: Roy and Julie Leake, Carole Beckford, Tony and Rosie Ives, Julie Brewer, Sid Steele, Penny Cresswell and Carol Williams

The inaugural Bowls England awards at the Athena, Leicester recognised the ‘best of the best’ individuals who have contributed to the game over the past year. The ceremony was attended by over 350 people from around the country. Sid and Joy’s dedication to youth bowls was recognised when they were awarded the ‘Unsung Heroes’ award. Following the sad and unexpected news of Joy’s death in January, this award could not have meant more.

Sid and Joy’s daughter attended the ceremony and accepted the award on Joy’s behalf. There was not a dry eye on our table, and countless other tables too. Dorset Youth Bowls Academy has always known we are indebted to the dedication of Sid and Joy and we would not be where we are now without them, it was wonderful to see their dedication recognised by the wider bowls community. We know Joy’s legacy will be enduring at Dorset Youth Bowls Academy and now her dedication will officially be recognised as an Unsung Hero. Well done Sid and Joy. And many thanks to everyone who voted and for all the support the Academy has received.
