On Saturday 25th January, Bristol Indoor Bowling Club hosted an open U16 Aussie Pairs Tournament. The tournament was very well supported and saw young entrants from many clubs across the south west compete. The Dorset Youth Bowls Academy was very well represented with five pairs entered into the draw for the initial round robin group stage. Aimee & Smaranda, Lucie & Theo as well as Mollie & Martha made up three of the four pairs in the first group, with both Tom & Hannah and Sylvia & Max drawn separately into two of the remaining three groups.
The standard of play during the group stages was very high with our five pairs representing the DYBA impeccably, both in terms of gameplay and etiquette. It was a true testament to the quality of coaching our players receive through both the DYBA as well as the junior sessions at Dolphin.
Lucie & Theo, as well as Mollie & Martha fought hard during the group stages but ultimately finished just behind Aimee & Smaranda who combined very well as a pair to secure second place in their group, qualifying them for the plate semi final. The plate semi final was a very closely competed match with Aimee & Smaranda narrowly missing out on the very last shot!
Our other two pairs both won their respective groups and were drawn against each other in an all DYBA semi final. Tom & Hannah edged the battle against Sylvia & Max to win the semi final and earn a place in the final where both academy players battled well, but eventually finished runners up to the very strong pair from Gloucestershire!
Well done to all those who took part, it really was a very well run event with some exceptional bowls on display. Roll on next year!!
