Sunday 4th September saw the Academy take on Branksome bowls club in a 4 rink triples match.
With several of the Academy making their debut, it was a nervy start on some rinks, but with parent and spectators support everyone soon found their feet and produced some fine performances.
Tom, Daria and Emma quickly found themselves up against fearsome opposition who kept changing their head no matter how well they bowled. This coupled with it not having been Emma’s favourite rink on previous matches this season, makes their come back all the more impressive and they should be congratulated in the way they dug in and came back only to be pipped to the winning post on the last end.
Meanwhile, Molly and Luc were strong and impressive in their game ably assisted by the up-and-coming Sid! Their result was never in doubt as they kept their cool throughout the game. Well done.
Our other two rinks of Hannah, Leo and Marc alongside Smandra, Max and Matthew both had a tight tussle against strong opposition. All six bowled well individually and when they started communicating with each other, the results were fantastic!
At ten ends the overall scores were equal with the academy and Branksome both having 45 shots a piece. With the last end looming on each rink, the Academy were two shots ahead…. Wow, a tenser ending it couldn’t have been. Emma’s rink was last to finish and they needed two to square the match. Tom gave them a great start, with Daria backing up really well. Then Branksome responded with some great bowls to change the head. By the time Emma came to bowl they were holding one. Despite her best efforts Branksome were in no mood to let the Academy get the two they needed for the draw and the Branksome skip played a fantastic shot to ensure their win.
A great game played in a lovely spirit and a big ‘Thank you’ to all the Branksome players and members for the game and the hospitality. It was a super afternoon, and we hope you will give us the opportunity to try and take our revenge next season.
